October is the tenth month of the year in the Gregorian Calendar and has 31 days. In Latin, octo means “eight,” reflecting the fact that October was the eighth month in the Roman calendar which started in March.
October is also called the Wine Month. Since the 16th Century it is referred to as the paternoster / rosary month.

In winter erwtensoep (pea soup) is very popular. Depending on the weather, stamppot and winter soups are eaten from fall to the beginning of spring. It is commonly believed that a bowl of erwtensoep tastes better when it’s freezing outside. Which may be true, as in winter it is often served at outdoor activities.
